A thigh lift is a surgical procedure that eliminates sagging excess tissue from the inner and outer thighs. Sometimes diet and exercise aren’t enough. Also known as thighplasty, a thigh lift is an ideal procedure for those wishing to improve and streamline the appearance of their thighs. During a thigh lift, Dr. Michael Frederick will expertly sculpt away those trouble spots in your thighs while enhancing your naturally beautiful contours. Although thigh lifts are commonly performed after massive weight loss, they can also be performed in patients with sagging skin due to age, or patients with thick thighs who wish to first decrease the bulk of the thigh with a liposuction procedure. Unfortunately, no amount of exercise and no available technology exists to tighten or firm hanging folds of excess skin and tissue without surgery.[1] If you’re struggling with uncomfortable and unflattering tissue on your thighs, you may be a good candidate for a thigh lift. About Thigh Lifts
Benefits
If you are experiencing low self-esteem or discomfort around wearing tight clothing, shorts, or swimsuits because of the appearance of your thighs, then a thighplasty may help you feel more confident by shaping and lifting the skin in your thigh area. Other benefits include a more even skin appearance around your thigh, less thigh skin laxity, and a smaller circumference in the thigh area. A thigh lift is commonly performed on patients that have undergone massive weightloss, or who are looking to correct signs of aging on their lower half. For some patients, this procedure improves their comfort and mobility and allows them to wear a wider variety of better-fitting clothing as well!
Candidates
Even those committed to leading a healthy lifestyle, including adhering to proper nutrition and fitness, have trouble with certain areas. You may be a good candidate for a thigh lift if the following applies:
- You are a healthy non-smoker.
- Your weight is consistent and not fluctuating.

Preparation
Dr. Frederick will provide detailed instructions for you to follow in preparation for your surgery. However, here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind as you get ready:
- Avoid alcohol and focus on a healthy lifestyle and diet to help your body recover faster and reduce the risk of infections.
- To increase blood flow and help the healing process, incorporate light exercise or physical activity into your daily routine.
- Refrain from anti-inflammatory medications that could increase bleeding.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first few nights after your surgery.
- Prepare for a recovery period that could last several weeks.
Thigh Lift Procedure
You will be sedated via IV or general anesthesia for maximum comfort during the surgery. Each thighplasty is highly customized and based on a patient’s individual needs, but most surgeries last between 2 and 4 hours. The location and number of incisions will depend on the amount of skin removed for each patient. Incisions are typically placed on the inside of each thigh, and are concealed in the groin. Once the extra skin is removed, skin around the thigh is reshaped, and the remaining skin is lifted into into position, all incisions will be closed with sutures. Bandages and compression garments will be applied, and most patients will also require small drainage tubes to drain the fluid produced under the skin during the healing process. Some patients may need to spend the night at the hospital.
Recovery
Bed rest for up to one week after surgery is necessary to keep weight and pressure off your thighs, and during this time, you may feel a tightness in your thighs as you begin to heal. You will be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort. Any strenuous activity is prohibited, and walking may be difficult for you during the first few days after your thigh lift. However, it is important to take short, regular walks to maintain proper circulation. You can also expect to wear compression garments for up to one month after surgery. Dr. Frederick will give you more detailed and specific instructions to follow in the weeks after your surgery. It is essential to follow these instructions closely to shorten your recovery time and prevent infection as you heal. As you recover from a thigh lift, you may notice some typical symptoms that are a normal part of the healing process that will decrease over time, including:
- Tingling, or sporadic bouts of discomfort
- Tightness and stiffness in your lower body
- Hypersensitivity or numbness
- Itchiness around the incision areas as the skin heals
- A temporary asymmetric appearance, as each side of your body heals at a different rate
Be sure to call 911 immediately if you experience any of the uncommon severe symptoms:
- A high fever (over 101 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
- Confused behavior, such as hallucinations
- Constant, intense pain, or pain that your pain medication cannot control
Results
More shapely, smaller, and younger-looking thighs are the desirable and long-lasting results of a thigh lift. You will also notice an improvement in the quality of the way the skin around your thighs feels. Once the swelling goes down, you will see noticeable results, but it could take several months to see the full benefits of the procedure. The results of a thigh lift are will last for years to come as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a stable weight. Some scarring will occur, but Dr. Frederick is an expert who will work to ensure that your scars are as carefully hidden as possible. As a result, over time, the scars will shrink and fade.

FAQ
HOW DO I KNOW IF A THIGH LIFT IS RIGHT FOR ME?
A thigh lift may be right for you if you have lost a lot of weight or are experiencing sagging or droopy excess skin around your thighs due to age.
I’M WORRIED ABOUT THE PAIN. DOES A THIGH LIFT HURT?
For the first few days, you will feel a tightness in your thighs, but you should not experience sharp stabbing aches or pains. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help ease your discomfort and will be available should you have any concerns or extreme symptoms.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A THIGH LIFT AND LIPOSUCTION?
Liposuction removes excess fat, while a thigh lift shapes and removes excess skin resulting from massive weight loss, liposuction, or aging.
WILL I NEED SOMEONE TO SAY WITH ME DURING MY RECOVERY?
Yes, it is necessary for a responsible adult to drive you home after your surgery, as well as stay with you for at least 24 hours afterward to make sure you take your medications and help you with anything else you may need as you recover.
CAN I HAVE OTHER PROCEDURES DONE AT THE SAME TIME AS A THIGH LIFT?
Yes, there are multiple other aesthetic surgeries that can be performed at the same time as a thigh lift, and your surgeon will carefully plan out your options and the best choices for a surgery that will work for you. Many patients choose to shorten the recovery process by undergoing more than one procedure at the same time.
